On Saturday, 24th of January 2004, NZLUG Auckland are holding an installfest from 10am to 4pm in Building 180 at the Mt Albert Unitec campus, to help those wanting to install Linux - a free Open-Source Operating System. This event will also provide a forum for people to discuss and ask questions about all facets of Linux and Open-Source Technology.

This is the second event held in the last 12 months in the Auckland Region by the NZLUG. Among those attending this event will be the president of the New Zealand Open-Source Society, commercial Linux vendors, industry IT professionals and hobbyists/enthusiasts.

Development of the old content management system (if you could call it that) used at linux.net.nz has died a quiet death before even reaching it's 1.0 release, so I've trashed it, and moved to a more modern CMS with a larger userbase called Drupal.

Part of the reason for the lack of up to date content here has been dealing with the existing CMS back end. To put not too fine a point on it, I'd have rather changed another nappy than posted a story with it :-)

Drupal should also help with delegating tasks properly, something that was difficult to do previously.

Along with the old CMS has gone the old layout. I hope you all like the new layout - I think it's far cleaner and more modern. I've attempted to move content that may have historical interest, but if there is something missing, let me know - backups have been made of the old site.

The astute amongst you will notice a small link at the bottom of the page to my website. I've always done my best to keep this site as non-commercially biased as possible, and I will continue to do so (yes, there's still a list of my competitors here!), but I feel a little credit has been earned.

The New Zealand Linux User Group (NZLUG) featured at the recent ICE expo.

This year included impromptu performances on the virtues of open source software to a delighted crowd and distribution of hundreds of Knoppix CDs.

The stand was manned by a team of voluneteers who gave up their free time to speak to interested members of the public about Linux.

One big, final, THANK YOU to the crew at IDG, particularly Doug Casement and Claire Munro for being so accomodating and for sponsoring our space. Without their efforts we would not have been at the expo in the first place.

An installfest is already in the planning due to the widespread public interest generated, watch this space for further details.
