| Who: | Peter Harrison (President of the NZOSS) |
| What: | Silent Success
Many open source projects, especially in the Java arena, have gone under
the radar. They are not as well known as Apache, Linux and OpenOffice,
but they are providing the core technologies many companies now have
deployed at the core of their businesses. Learn what some of these
silent successes are, and how they are helping NZ software businesses.
Tomcat - the reference implementation of the Servlet and JSP specification.
Hibernate - Recently acquired by Red Hat as part of JBoss. Hibernate is a
popular data persistence engine that grew out of dissatisfaction with
heavy J2EE technology.
Postgresql - Seemingly always in the shadow of MySQL, Postgresql is a
rock solid database being used in the financial and healthcare sectors.

| What: | Moodle is a course management system (CMS) - a free, Open Source software package designed using sound pedagogical principles, to help educators create effective online learning communities.
Moodle has a large and diverse user community with over 100,000 registered users on Moodle.org, speaking over 70 languages in over 150 countries. Worldwide there are over one hundred Moodle-based e-learning sites with over 5,000 users, and many thousands of smaller sites.

Stuart will discuss the implementation of Moodle, specifically in New Zealand, on the LAMP platform (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP), although Moodle is also available for Windows, and Mac OS. ÃÂÃÂ He will also explore the options and approaches that can be used by individuals, small business, training providers, and large organisations in New Zealand.
A huge supporter of Open Source, Stuart has promised that AuckLUG members who attend the meeting in May will be given free access to Moodle hosting services to 'try things out' for themselves!
