Who: Rene Bartosh What: MythTV We're really lucky this month to have Rene, who's only in Auckland for a short time, to have volunteered to do a presentation of MythTV. MythTV can be thought of as an appliance in the same way that pfsense is a firewall, MythTV is a PVR (Personal Video Recorder). Basically a computer with tv card(s) in it which gives you all the benefits of a Video recorder and computer. So on faster computers you should be able to record, timeshift, watch other channels while recording, let it record your favourite shows automatically as well as make dvd's (I think?) of recorded material. This has traditionally been a really popular subject matter for presentations which we haven't had for years (not in the time I've been organising the meetings at the very least). And about food and drink: Should we try and take over the kebab shop before the meeting? Do the whole Greeters thing and hopefully make the whole coming to a meeting thing for the first time a slightly less intimidating prospect. (feedback to the mailing list, please) | |

My understanding is that this will focus mainly on Nginx. Nginx is a lightweight webserver which uses standard protocols to communicate with other systems (such as php) rather than including all of this within the webserver. Regards, Nevyn. | |

| Hi Everyone, This month I've gone outside of the AuckLUG group to find a presenter. I've now had confirmation that this is happening. So the details are here, now updated - please note there are some changes: When: Tuesday, 8 June Starting 7.00pm (Monday is a Public Holiday of course) Where: OSS, Level 1, 162 Grafton Road, Auckland (The Compass Building, corner of Grafton Rd and Khyber Pass, opposite the Southern Cross Healthcare building) Openstreetmap. Who: Michael Dance and (possibly) Thom Toogood Both of these guys are involved in the Auckland Drupal user group. What: An introduction to Drupal: Drupal is an open source Content Management System used in some of the most unusual places (i.e. Sony music use it despite not being particularly open source friendly). It became open source in 2001. It's probably one of the most mature CMS's out there. It has a good reputation for security - having it's own security team looking over security matters. It's backend provides interfaces so security is assured while providing flexibility. There's a certain amount of abstraction from the underlying php code so you don't need to be a programmer to use it. There are some other really cool features such as support for "views" - much like the database concept. The level of customization is astounding - it can be hard to identify the fact that they're looking at a Drupal generated page. NB: Bring a Plate for supper afterward! | From Rob Connolly... The University of Auckland Linux User Group are proud to announce our 1st Installfest for the new UALUG incarnation. For those of you that are new to the Open Source world an Installfest is basically an event during which experienced Linux users are on hand to help those that want to get started with using Free and Open Source Software. The event will start with a couple of talks from members of the LUG on how to get started installing Linux on your computer and a demo session of machines running various Linux distributions. The rest of the day will be taken up with the Installfest proper, during which members of the LUG will be on hand to help out and provide general technical support. The will also be free CDROMs of various Linux distributions available for you to install at home. If you are interested in Free and Open Source alternatives to proprietary software please feel free to come along and find out more. If you would like to have a go at installing Linux on your computer (Laptop or Desktop) please bring it along. The event will be held in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Briefing Room (Rm#: 303.257), 2nd Floor, University of Auckland Science Centre, Princes St, Auckland on the 2nd May 2010 from 10am - 5pm. Follow the UALUG signs to find the room. Doors will be open from 10am - 11am, with instructions left at the door for those who arrive after this. | As posted to AuckLUG by Nevyn... Well, with me being fairly slack, I haven't really organised a speaker for next month's meeting. So.... I mentioned the possibility of a meeting at a place called Pizza Pizza (also called the Kiwi Music Bar - avoiding this name as it isn't just a bar). I'm sure there's going to be at least one small presentation (10 minutes or so) so it won't ALL be socialising. I went up tonight and made sure it'd be okay to hold a meeting there - food, drink, restaurant license (so no issues with those under 18 attending at all - so long as you don't try getting an alcoholic beverage), fairly quiet on a Monday. The check boxes it doesn't tick: Parking. It's in town, so it's a mission if you want to park around there although it is right across from Aotea square in which case, if that car park is open, there's parking (though not free parking). So the announcement: When: UPDATED: NOW TUESDAY 6TH APRIL, 7pm - Due to Easter, venue is closed on Monday... Where: Pizza Pizza (The Kiwi Music Bar) 332 Queen Street Auckland City It's on Queen St between Wellesley St and Rutland St. It's lodged right in between Brooklyn Bar and a Superette right across from Sky City Metro. Look for a blue door with some rather steep stairs leading up. OpenStreetMap Link. What: Anything and everything. A very social meet. Talk bollocks and Linux etc. Come up, have a pizza - $12 Regular, $16 Large - perhaps even have a beer ($4 handles). So there we have it - a solution to the bar meet problem (in that it was restrictive in that you had to be of a certain age to go to one but the atmosphere a bar meet offered a relaxing atmosphere). It's also in town so bus routes shouldn't be too much of an issue (although it's a bit of a walk from Britomart) Regards, Nevyn. | |

What: Mark Osborne is doing a presentation on ASHS' I.T. systems - all of which is Linux (except for the student management system) and how this has been a benefit to their learning environment. I've also invited Peter Harrison to come along to talk about a project that's been brewing over at NZOSS (the New Zealand Open Source Society) which is an open source Student Management System. I think we may even have a bit of a talk from some of the students at ASHS but don't quote me on that. There'll probably be a few attending at the very least. And this just in from Mark Osborne: Kia ora, A reminder that everyone is welcome at Albany Senior High School for the LUG meeting tonight. Some parking is available at gate 3 (northern end of the building), with more parking available across the road in the church and contractors' carparks. Once you are parked and at gate 3, walk past the gymnasium, around the red construction barriers and across the cobbled plaza towards the glass doors of the cafe. There will be someone there to greet you. We'll have a presentation about the country's first open source high school, some students to talk about the work they have done and something on the NZOSS open source student management project. | This from Nevyn... Hi Everyone, Just thought I'd send out a reminder about the barbeque this weekend. I've been thinking about what to bring along and any preparation I should do before hand. Things like making up some chick pea patties, for the vegetarians, and buying some foil trays for the cooked food. Perhaps some chicken sausages (do they still do those fantastic Chicken and Garlic Sausages>) if I can convince someone to bring along a couple of loaves of bread (hint hint). Of course we're going to need something liquid as well and kids because kids and barbeques just seem to go well together (and that's without having the two occupy the same space).
