PPP Configurator

This is a simple setup tool for the configuration of dialup PPP Internet connections under Linux.

If you're going to be on the Internet, SECURITY is something that SHOULD be on your mind. Be aware that most Linux distributions are NOT geared for security out-of-the-box. Please take a read of the Security HOWTO and take steps to lock down your machine. Also, please encourage the makers of your Linux distribution to apply the OpenBSD Principle - ie. "secure by default."
If you are using Debian GNU/Linux, try using pppconfig or wvdial (highly recommended). Once you have this set up, you just run pon and poff to start and stop your dialup connection.
If you are using Redhat Linux, start up X as root (or su from a normal login), and run control-panel then go into the network setup. Add a ppp device, and it should prompt you for setup details. You could also try netconf - it has been known to work on the odd occasions. See Redhat's PPP Setup Tips page.
If you are using a WinModem, you may be out of luck. WinModems use software on the host computer to handle the connection, instead of a dedicated chip, and most of the time this software is only made available for Windows. However, some modems are now supported - see http://www.linmodems.org/ to see if your model can be used.
