try sticking this line into the bottom of your /etc/fstab
none /proc/bus/usb usbdevfs defaults 0 0

with any luck it'll work after that...

if not, try and get gphoto2 going, http://gphoto.sourceforge.net
I see there's support for a Mustek Gsmart 350, not sure if that's your
one or not..

does your camera come up as a drive in windows (usb mass storage
controller)? if so, then you should have no trouble getting it going..
mine doesn't unfortunately but that line above in fstab seemed to be the
key to making gphoto2 recognise it..
