Install Fest

Hi?Dummy

Bring along your favourite distro to install on your own computer or one of ours. Let John Flower (johngflower@actrix.co.nz) know what distro you will use and whether you want to install on one of our PCs. If you don't want to install just bring your PC and show us what you've done to it so we can be impressed by your geekness. Brynn will bring his laptop and show how he is using WINE to run his Windows programs faster and more securely than they run on Windows iteself.

During the install process we'll discuss the pros and cons of each distro, drink coffee and help each other with hardware issues. At the end we'll compare and see who's the best ;-)

Suggested distros to bring along are:

  1. Fedora
  2. Slackware
  3. Ubuntu
  4. Gentoo
  5. Linspire
  6. BSD
  7. OSX
  8. Puppy Linux
  9. Damn Small Linux
  10. Debian

Computers to be won!

Brynn has a bunch of Compaq SFF that used to use as firewalls that we'll be using for people who don't want to install on their own computer - bring your own monitor, keyboard, mouse.? If you bring a guest who has never been to a PLUG Workshop before you will go into the draw at the end of the workshop for one of the computers - two will be given away. If you want to buy one Brynn will sell the other computers, on the night, for $50 each (personal sale so no receipt).? Here's the Specs:

  1. Compaq SFF - excellent firewalls or second computer for the home.? Very reliable. We have some that have been running for 24/7 for 24 months. Similar to this.
  2. 6GB drive
  3. 128 of RAM
  4. NO CDROM
  5. Onboard 2x AGP
  6. Onboard sound
  7. Serial, usb, ps2
  8. Onboard 10/100 Intel Network Adapater?
  9. 2 x PCI slots
  10. Quick release components such as case lid, HD, PCI raiser.
