You can restore the Firefox 2 *appearance* with the oldbar extension:

It still uses the same search - so typing 'ma' may prefer iMAges.google.comover
MAps.google.com.  There are lots of requests for a "search from the front
only" mode to be added [1], but it hasn't yet.  I found that it soon learned
my pattern and isn't too offensive, though I can see why others are very
upset with it.
