Vodem's will run okay under ubuntu (Gutsy/Hardy at least), they used to
require plugging in a couple of times before they were detected right, but
there is a deb package with some utilities and hotplug configs that fixes
that.
The caveat here is that I have not used them for extended periods for a
while, and when we were using it for days at a time it needed restarted
slightly more often than a dlink DSL modem (probably once a day). That was a
year and a half ago, and we were not using the deb package at the time,
which seems to make a lot of things work better.
