Just sorted it. I was only using vesa because this machine is not
really meant to be used as a work station at all though it does just
because it's easier giving some members of my family access to the
machine to browse the internet.
Anyway, I was having a play and changed the drivers to sis which is
what I was supposed to be using (although I had though that vesa was
kind of a failsafe fallback option - strange that they wouldn't be
working). This worked but in the same as before. I.e. so long as I
didn't want to switch to another terminal (seeing as I do this on a
regular basis this was no where near good enough to be carrying on
with). I found a page describing the sis drivers in detail here:

In it, the frame buffer drivers are also noted so I decided to have a
play. Anyway, it turns out that switching was fixed after that. After
adding sisfb to /etc/modules I rebooted to test and everything is as
dandy as a dandy thing.
