Try deleting (i.e. moving to a backup) any xorg.conf* files. I had some
strangeness with it loading from xorg.conf.failsafe rather than what I was
specifying, and it was all very confusing. If you delete them all, then it'll
hopefully be forced to recreate them. Ideally, using the correct driver for
the card (VESA is a bit icky).
