Sounds like they changed the driver for your card between versions of
X-Windows.

Sounds like an old video card, if you're using the VESA driver. Does
xf86cfg (s/xf86config? - can't remember which one) list a different
driver that would match your card?

Failing that I'd try and bring back the driver you were using before, to
use in your newer X - dunno about stability, but it might be worth a
"test".
