It's the onboard video on a Asus M2A-VM HDMI motherboard.  Kaffeine
seems to handle it alright, so it can't be all that strange.  It seems
to be even worse using Gnome than KDE.

Dunno.  I've never knowing used it.  (I'm rather ignorant.)
