That's right -
On mine it says "Volume Control: Intel ICH5 (Alsa Mixer)"
That's what I'm calling the "volume control dialog". That dialog has a
menu bar - with menus "File Edit Help" - in grey at the top.
I intended you to use the "Preferences" entry in that "Edit" menu. You
appear to have used the preferences entry in the rt-click menu. They're
different.

On mine, it's called that: Volume Control Preferences" The other one was
also called that - nice logic. But in the one I want you to look at,
there are check boxes which enable/disable the sliders.

With luck, there's one under "realtek" called "mic" or "microphone" or
something. Let me know what it's got.
Should have a tab for ICH8 too... let me know what that's got.
It's looking like that "unknown device" subsystem in the lspci -vv
output is the realtek. Perhaps Acer have been cutting corners on their
mobo.

That's not good. I was hoping it would say something like:
Names of available cards:
ICH8
Realtek
asoundconf set-default-card Intel
It should already be the default, but it won't hurt.
After That, enable the backports repo and update.
That is:

Backports)" box.
close

There will be a whole lot of updates ... if you have a decent bandwidth,
update everything and go have a rest. You need all the security updates,
and anything about the kernel and alsa and oss.
And a sharp letter to Acer I think...
