That should be detected then ... have you had a look what lspci has to
say about your audiocard? If all the other sound works - then the driver
in the tarball is probably already loaded.

In the top panel on the right, there is a speaker widget - rt-click it
and select "volume control". See if there is a microphone listed. If
not, go to edit > preferences and see if it is there.

---- interesting: googling, I find lots of ads but no reviews. The only
people talking about the mic don't seem to care about it. But surely
some folk want voip?

How goen the wlug harware discovery script these days - worth a try?
