It's the way it is done in most 3D animation software. You have a slider
for the timeline of your animations, or "score". That shows the key
frames from between which the "tweens" are generated.

I've been doing that for years starting with 3D Studio Max r4 around
2000. The software was well mature then, possibly having a sliding score
since 1996.

For a current free implementation see ArtOfIllusion
http://artofillusion.org which implemented its score in late 2001.

They have tutorials on animation that may be more illuminating to you.
