I have similar experience with Postfix and Courier (IMAP and POP3). I used 
Dovecot for a while, but that was back before it supported Maildir and so 
things got slow. I'm pretty sure this was fixed long ago. Aside from that, I 
had no issues with it, but I haven't tried since, being quite happy with 
Courier.
