Configuring smb in yast basically only sets the workgroup in
/etc/samba/smb.conf
Mounting server shares system-wide can be achieved by just mounting
another network filesystem. You'll have to get the server name and share
name right, auto-llokup doesn't always work, esp when your local hosts
firewall drops broadcast packets (which I think is the default). cifs
has worked for me when smbfs didn't, though that doesn't seem to be a
general rule. It's possible that things can get very difficult if the
server share requires encrypted access.
Go to a shell and use smbclient -L servername to figure out the details
first.
You can also use KDE to create a desktop icon and to connect to that
share when clicked, asking for your password at that time so it's not
stored on the system. It works well. Dunno how to do this in gnome.
There is no program smbfstart shipped with openSUSE 10.3 retail box DVD,
no idea what that is about.
