[nzlug] samba: puzzled user...

I think it is the gui-fication that's got me turned around...
In ubuntu - I can export the ~/Public (say) directory by rt-click and
ticking the boxes. The configuration needs a workgroup name... in
general, I can get an ubuntu box to join a workgroup by exporting a
share to it. This is friendly - so far so cool.
If samba client/server not installed, it sets that up for me so it's a
no-brainer.
How can I get an ubuntu box to import a share without exporting one?
Is it possible to export a share "globally"? (All workgroups on the lan
can get it?)
Is it possible to scan a network for workgroups?
These must be common questions...
The situation is: I have a whole bunch of machines that move around...
not always on the network. Probably best if I set one machine as an nfs
server, for this course I'm teaching. Then, when the course is all
together they can all mount it. Comments?
