oops ... it seems like I accidentally stumbled across the shortcut key
for "Send" in Gmail :)
I'll try again ...
1. Under the Edit menu, click Preferences
2. Click the Advanced tab/button at the top of the Thunderbird
Preferences dialog
3. Select the General tab.
4. Click the Config Editor button near the bottom of the dialog
5. Right-click in the main section of the about:config dialog,
highlight "New" and select "String" from the sub-menu.
6. In the "Enter the preference name" dialog, type
"network.protocol-handler.protocol.app.http"
7. In the "Enter string value" dialog, enter the full path to
whichever browser you want to use.

I run Ubuntu, but the command line hold no fears for me. I'd rather do it the Ubuntu/Gnome way if possible purely for the experience and knowledge gained thereby!
