by ffmpeg's own admission, most of what it encodes/decodes is probably
patent-encumbered. they're not even sure of exactly which algorithms are
affected and the terms of those that are. the whole thing is quite
complex.
the main thing to remember is, as a private user working with ffmpeg for
your own personal purposes, you probably have very little to worry about
w.r.t the patent status of the various algorithms. if you're using
ffmpeg in a commercial product, then you should probably talk to a
lawyer
