I think you may be overestimating your importance in the market.

I suspect the website was set up to sell domains on the basis that if
you sell tons, you'll make money, even at tiny margins. I suspect that
it will fail, given the size of the NZ market. I further suspect that it
has nothing to do with trying to halt any market advances Hosting Direct
has made, fictitious or otherwise.

Complain to the DNC about what? Someone selling domains for too little
profit? I'm sure they'll be keen to pursue that one.
