[nzlug] File associations in Linux

I write an application[0] that reads a certain file type and does things with
said files. I distribute it (on linux) as a .tar.gz file, which is fine.
However, I'd like to know how to have it check and (optionally) associate
itself with the file type, just for the user.

Is there a cross-distro standard for user file associations that I can hook
into?
