I still have my ZX80, 1k static ram and yep, you could unpin the Z80 clock pin 
and drive the thing down to DC.  I built a home-brew external expansion cage 
into which I built stepper motor driver, ADC, DAC and direct i/o pins.  All 
coding was in machine code (ie hand assembly), gosh those were the days... 
These days I'm lucky if I get to see any h/w, especially now that you "build" a 
new server "virtually" from terminal login.
