CD ripping software on PCLinuxOS defaults to ogg.
This bothered my brother because he wanted to move stuff to his son's
MP3 player.
Before changing his ripping default, I copied an ogg file to the
player and tried to play it.
It played! (Dick Smith branded 1GB or 2GB player slightly bigger than
a thumb drive - docs only said it played MP3 and wma).

Other encoding software also defaults to open codecs.
I like this approach - create open but play both open and proprietary.
