yes, this can be locked down with gconf. the problem here is mostly the
defaults. and the interface. i don't actually want to lock down the
interface. i just want it to be harder to change.
a systemwide lockdown is not workable if you have different users on the
machine. (unless it is overridable by the user, which is sometimes not
desirable)
a local user lockdown is better, but ideally i'd just like to remove the
item that allows removal of the panel in the panels menu. i don't
actually want to lock down the interface, just make it harder to loose
stuff.
interface configuration should only be possible through a seperate
application, where you can preview the changes in a mockup window, and
are really clear that you are now changing your interface. ideally this
would also save previous changes and allow you to undo.
being able to undo a change is something that most interface designers
talk about as a must have, but most applications and interfaces do not
even consider.
