i don't know how this works with xfce, but gnome can be configured on
the spot, that is eg, i can click on the panel and change it. this is a
nice feature, until your grandmother complains to you that she can't
start programs anymore. and then you discover that the panel is gone.
an easy to use gui must not be changable by accident...
