[nzlug] Home Media Server

A very good day to you, trusty listers.

I have moved and now find myself in an environment where space is at a
premium and I need my servers silent (as they will be stored in my
bedroom cupboard). My old Mac Mini fits this description perfectly,
and I would like to turn it into my home media server. .
I have a PS3 hooked up to some nice 7.1 speakers in the living room
that I wold like to use as the main reproduction tool (mainly for
music) and there is an Airport Express floating around as well,
altough that I am happy to deal with.
The indoor wifi should be fast enough to deal with the bandwidth.

My question is: could anybody recommend a media server app for Linux/
OS X that would be able to supply the PS3 with content within an UPnP
environment? Does Avahi do the trick? There is a freeware app called
Nero Home Media Server for Microsoft OS's (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/File-Sharing/Nero-MediaHome.shtml
) and there's Windows Media Player (urgh) but I would obviously like
to avoid to immerse myself in WIndows at home. I am quite happy to
have Linux run on the MacMini if that's what it takes, but OS X app
suggestions would be appreciated as well. And no, Itunes doesn't work
(yet).

Any ideas?

Dirk
