Thanks Steve,
I removed 1 drive from my array with mdadm. This showed that I did have
issues with /etc/pam.d/common* files and the /etc/nsswitch.conf file on
the active root system.
Fixed these and now I can boot into normal mode, but can only log into
kde as root. All other users fail.
I can add a new user okay, just the existing ones fail.
Weird things are now happening, like my static IP's aren't resolving,
despite the hosts file being correct (I have eth aliases).
At this point I think I might take a backup and do a fresh install. A
lot of work, but I think there are now too many hidden issues.
In hindsight I think I should have built an array whilst in knoppix,
then edited the files. Well at least I know alot more about mdadm now!
Thanks for all your help.
Next time I play with LDAP + NSS it won't be on my main PC until I know
I can achieve what I set out to do. Information on the net about this
seems 'varied' shall I say.
