Standard ubuntu gutsy:
common-password:
password required pam_unix.so nullok obscure md5
common-session:
session required pam_unix.so
session optional pam_foreground.so
These probably won't be right for ldap/nss but may get you logged in!
Sorry, can't help you with the rewriting stuff. It won't be the mirroring if both copies are modified.
