Thanks Steve,

I'm running software RAID 1, and indeed I did wonder about how that was
'contributing' to the situation. It also makes me wonder how I will
mount the array while running a live CD in order to make the changes I
need to do. I need to mount /dev/md2, which is my root.

It's all about the timing of what loads when in the boot process, which
is the core of my current problem regarding LDAP + NSS. It trys to
connect to the LDAP server before the network has been started (well
that's my take of the notes of seen my googling).
