Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Unfortunately:

- single mode/recovery mode does not let me into the system
- adding init=/sbin/init doesn't either
- adding init=/bin/bash comes up with a 'does not exits error', then
proceeds to a Busybox console.

Looks like I will have to try a Live CD.......
