Hi Roland,

The recovery mode should supposedly boot you into single user mode. If
it's still coming up with an authentication problem (which it should
because it's not supposed to authenticate at all in single user mode)
you could try changing the linux line in grub (press esc during boot,
hit 'e' and then find the line that starts with linux and hit e again)
and adding "init=/sbin/init" to the end. If this doesn't work, you'll
probably have to go down the livecd route.

The issue I have with using livecd's is:
a) there are alternative ways which allow you to use your system
rather than having to go through the trouble of a livecd
b) in my experience, they can sometimes be more trouble than they're
worth. I've tried to do things like backup data from a defunct windows
installation only to find that they don't have ntfs support or no
samba support or something equally as irritating.
