I disagree, but the other way! Those rules were set when a) Having 1GB of *disk space* was huge and b) the cost of memory was orders of magnitude higher than they are today.
Also, OS's like HP used to make a copy of the running application in swap on startup so they could swap in/out fast ( until the performance hit of this p*ssed off so much of us they changed it ).
If you have a gig of ram and need swap on top of it then you're running some pretty specialised stuff, which won't normally be running on a machine like this!
I'd go for 256MB tops swap, or even live dangerously with none at all!
