I agree absolutely. My hope was that I could use a high-quality 
microphone in the front plug.

I have just bought a "USB DSP 5.1 External 3D Sound Card Adapter" on 
Trade-me. How well it will work, or whether it will work at all, 
remains to be seen, but it cost only $14 including delivery. I'll 
report on it when it arrives.
