My guess it's their standard (albeit very unreliable, esp if the new chip 
appears at the top of RAM) test of it working: go in to windows and see if it 
sees the new RAM. Perhaps they were trying to do something similar. TBH, I 
have no idea how you'd do that through the GUI in Ubuntu. 8.04 doesn't seem 
to have a hardware listing app installed by default (of course, I'd use 'top' 
or similar if I wanted to do that)
