Yesterday I gave virtualbox a go, and it worked well. aptitude installable 
(modules come separately due to an apt deficiency...make sure you install the 
right ones, and be aware that in hardy it may pull in a not-yet-released 
kernel which gave my non-free drivers conniptions). I didn't use it enough to 
see how fast it was, it seemed slow, but most of that was installing Ubuntu 
from a CD into the VM anyway.

Reminded me a lot of vmware.
