Exactly right.
The 3ware cards are good entry level RAID cards. Very solid.
There are other options for "true hardware" raid as well as host
controllers. You can get various harddisk enclosures that take two disks
and present them as a single (mirrored) disk to the host. We've got a
couple of Accusys ones at work, and I think Areca might make them as well.
And of course, there are ethernet based NAS systems that do internal
RAID at varying levels (RAID1 and 10 are common for the 4-disk units,
some will even do RAID5).
I don't know how the price compares against the 3ware, but there's
plenty of pricing available online for these things.
