I use RAID 0 on my workstation for speed. And I use unison (similar to
rsync) to create regular backups of critical documents etc on a remote
machine.

I also use mondorescue occasionally to create bootable snapshots of my
workstation (and some servers), so that I can rebuild it easily if ever
necessary.

Backups & use of RAID models are all about risk - how much do you value
the software/files on your machine vs how much work do you want to do to
and $ you wish to spend to setup backup regimes, buy extra hard
drives/hardware/electricity etc?

Incidentally I investigated fakeraid for another server, but in my
opinion it is still no better (probably worse) than software RAID, which
I find works perfectly well & fast enough for my use. I don't boot RAID
on anything though.

cheers
