I get an anoying issue with large tables bogging things down, but
switching to another app and back seems to fix it.

Its not attempting to autosave files is it?

Otherwise go to Tools->Options in OO. Select the view pane and play
with the 3D view options.

Also look at the memory pane and bump those up significantly, eg >100
MB graphics cache and ~20 MB per object. Even if this is not the issue
it should offer you a performance boost. The default is meant to work
on as many machines as possible, so let it know there is some leg room
on your shiny system :).
