Maybe I'm onto Networking 201 already. :-)

One of the things I read indicated that it was necessary to have two
different subnets.  Despite my lack of knowledge of networks, I was
somewhat familiar with the 192.168.x.x sort of thing and decided to
use that for eth1.  The router seems to need to use 10.1.1.x so I
figured that sort of difference would suit me.

Anyway, it turns out that quite simply, in addition to stopping any
firewall on the laptop, I needed to make sure that sshd had started.

Now I need to read up on X forwarding and the like.  At least I've got
started.  Thanks for all the suggestions.
