Perhaps I wasn't clear.  The laptop can get onto the internet but I
can't get from the desktop to the laptop.

Looking at other suggestions, I realized the problem must be with a
firewall on the laptop.  Installing firestarter on it, I managed to
fix that, so I think it might be the end of the problem.  At least I
can ping the laptop from the desktop.  Bit more to do before I can be
sure I have it all sussed.
