I'm using a SATA card in a soon to be retired box here. It shows up as;

00:09.0 RAID bus controller: Silicon Image, Inc. SiI 3114 [SATALink/SATARaid] 
Serial ATA Controller (rev 02)

and I believe it was purchased as a 'ST Lab A-223' card.

It just worked when I put it in (Debain Etch).
