They are somewhat different, but not as dramatically different as the
difference in the time taken.  

It takes scarcely more than 2 seconds to get a result from 
 aptitude search vim 

That's on on a minimally altered Mepis 6.5 installation on a 1.6 Ghz
dual core machine with 1 Gb of RAM.

yum -C list "vim*" takes more like 10 seconds.  That's on an AMD_64
system (2Ghz) running FC6 with 2 Gb RAM and with only a few different
things installed, and with both machines idling (to use an automotive
analogy).

Running top, I could see yum was using up to 75% of processing
resources.  I couldn't get a corresponding reading for aptitude
because it finished too quickly.

Could this be a case of the 64 bit operation being slower because it's
like using a truck to do a job that a motor bike could do easily?

I'm curious more than concerned.
