I believe that the *main* benefit of NX is reduction of round-trips - 
there are others, but this is what achieves most on an ADSL link, where 
bandwidth is not really all that bad, but there is appreciable latency.  
NX is certainly beneficial if you have really crap bandwidth (like 
dial-up).

There is a FreeNX package for Debian (I can find the link if you want) 
which is pretty easy to install.  NoMachine NX is probably even easier, 
but it's not 'free software' (I forget the exact definition - I'm pretty 
sure the linux server and client are free of monetary cost for 
non-commercial use, but it's not as 'free' as Debian)

Don't forget, when setting up ssh, using a non-standard port number will 
probably save you from lots of annoying log entries (script kiddies 
trying to hack in).  Pick a nice strange number, like 34282, or whatever 
you like.
