i was mostly wanting to point to vnc being slower.
if it is slower on local, then somewho i doubt it will be faster then
X11 over ssh.

what's your definition of home land here?

in the land where i grew up networking is not really that much faster. 
and in the land where i am home now (home is where i wash the dishes :-)
speed is not faster at all.
