[nzlug] International traffic really slow (OT)

Hi,

Yes, I should have metioned it's off topic, as it's not strictly Linux
related.

In regards to dealing with the ISP, Have been talking to my ISP for quite
some time. They claim the problem is related to the amount of
international bandwidth Telecom allows them to provide. I am trying to
establish if this is happening to others as well, with different ISP's.

The current information I have is that for most ISP's, the amount of
international bandwidth available is around 24 to 32KB/s per customer that
they have (only been told this, I have no written information on that
figure). So, if say 60 percent of there customers are using the internet,
then speeds will be around 60KB/s. I don't know how true this is, but
think that certianly, international traffic is slower than it should be, as
ISP's are selling ADSL as full speed, but then the actual speed is only
full speed for national traffic, for International, it's much less. I am
also wondering if there is any case here for the commerce commission to
look into. So, would like to hear other people's thoughts.

Regards
Glen Ogilvie
