[nzlug] Issue with GDM, Twinview, and Ubuntu Gutsy

Hopefully someone out there knows more about GDM than I do.
I often use my laptop with two monitors, using nvidia's 'twinview'. However,
gnome has a bug where if you go from one monitor to two, it doesn't realise
there's two, and stretches panels etc. across them both. In feisty, I found
that if I set up dual monitor, logged out, and logged in, then gnome saw it
as two monitors, and things were laid out fine from then until I next
restarted the X server.
However, with gutsy, whenever you log out X gets restarted, and so this
doesn't work. This makes dual monitor with twinview very hard to work with.
Does anyone know how I can stop GDM (or whatever it is doing this) restarting
X? I've set AlwaysRestartServer=false in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf, but it makes no
difference.
