Hi Simon,

Try putting this in your terminal:
gconftool-2 -s /apps/evolution/mail/notification/notification -t bool false
gconftool-2 -s /apps/evolution/mail/notification/blink-status-icon -t bool false

There's a bug report on this issue:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/156292

Seems that the people looking at it are getting inconsistent behavior
so nothing solid has been done yet.
