There is a "notification area" applet/thingy added to the panel. A
flashing envelope icon appears when mail arrives. Deleting the applet
just replaces this behavior with a popup (looks like a speech bubble)
that appears by the main menu saying the same thing.

The mail is handled by evolution. Under preferences, there is a setting
for notifications - which is set to "do not notify".

I thought I'd covered this in the initial email...
