For those of us who use multiple computers around home, IMAP is absolutely
wonderful. The ability to have a nice client that responds at local
application speeds is great. There's also the fact that you can upgrade
any client computer at whim, without the concerns about shifting mail
between systems.
If you have a single computer, POP may be entirely adequate for your
needs. However, many of us have a server at home, use a laptop and
desktop, and may connect back to home from work via SSH. IMAP is the only
way to deal with all those non-convergent connections. IMAP is far, far
more than just filtering, it's also a central store that is entirely
independant of the systems connecting to it.
